Location: Ireland
Access Method: Rope Access
WTG Model: Nordex N90
Problem
lightning protection systems on wind turbines are essential for the safety and proper functioning of the turbines. The previous inspection that was done was carried out incorrectly resulting in turbines getting damaged due to lightning strikes. It is vital that lightning protection systems are regularly inspected and are in good condition to avoid catastrophic damage.
Solution
We mobilised a two-man rope access team to complete the project on-site. Using a new custom retractable tether testing system with a megger. This is all connected over a local WI-FI network where all readings are instantly sent to the app on a tablet and stored according to the receptor being tested. this can then easily be exported as a report. We found multiple issues that were not reported on the previous inspection.
Importance of lightning protection inspection on wind turbines
Testing lightning protection systems on wind turbines are essential for the safety and proper functioning of the turbines. Lightning strikes can cause significant damage to wind turbines, including fires, structural damage, and malfunctions. By inspecting and testing the lightning protection systems, wind farm operators can ensure that their turbines are adequately protected and able to continue generating electricity safely.
One effective method of testing lightning protection systems on wind turbines is through the use of rope access. Depending on working hours and other factors we can carry out inspections on between 6-9 blades per day.
Safety: Rope access allows technicians to work at heights without the need r other specialised access equipment. This can significantly reduce the risk of falls and other accidents, making it a safer option for testing lightning protection systems.
Efficiency: Rope access allows technicians to quickly and easily access all parts of the wind turbine. This means that technicians can quickly and efficiently test all aspects of the lightning protection system from the tip of the blade to the base of the tower, ensuring that it is functioning properly.
Cost-effectiveness: Rope access is generally less expensive than other methods of accessing wind turbines. This can help wind farm operators save money on maintenance and testing costs.
In conclusion, testing lightning protection systems on wind turbines are essential for the safety and proper functioning of the turbines. Rope access is a safe, efficient, and cost-effective method of testing these systems, allowing technicians to quickly and easily access all parts of the wind turbine and ensure that the protection system is functioning properly.
